General Education Committee
The General Education Committee is a standing committee of the Faculty Senate Curriculum Council. The committee bears the primary responsibility for maintaining and developing the General Education Program at SIUE including reviewing proposals for additions, terminations, and modifications of all general education courses and requirements. Additionally the committee reviews requests for waivers of the team-teaching requirement in Interdisciplinary Studies courses, reviews proposed modifications in the General Education Program and makes recommendations as appropriate, advises the Director of General Education concerning scheduling and content of General Education courses as well as the need for additional courses, considers requests from students concerning general education requirements, may place any General Education course/requirement on probationary status or remove it from the General Education Program, and is responsible for the continuing review of the General Education Program.
The voting members of the committee include four faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences, one from each of the other schools with a baccalaureate program, one faculty member from Library and Information Services, two undergraduate students appointed by the Student Senate, and the Director of General Education. The faculty members serve staggered three-year terms, and the student members serve one-year terms. The non-voting members of the committee are the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Director of Academic Advising, the University Registrar, the Director of Assessment, and the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in charge of scheduling. Some representation may be delegated.
